CANNULATION TRAINING COURSE

Certificate of Competency on Completion
This One-Day intensive course will take place in a MedLab Training branch office. In a small group, you will be instructed in how to take blood ensuring that you adhere to strict infection control principles and our local Trust Policies.
After practising the skill on a manikin you will have the opportunity to cannulate a fellow participant, providing that informed consent will be given.
When you finish your course we will provide you with a Certificate of Competency.
We recommend that you are supervised by a suitable and competent person in your work place at least 5 times.

Please Note:

  1. You will receive a certificate of COMPETENCE. However, you cannot claim that you are experienced in cannulation after only one successful attempt on a real person.
  2. We are unable to organise any voluntary work in our associated hospitals for you to gain further experience. You will have to arrange this yourself

Course objectives

By the end of this session, candidates will be able to:

  • Demonstrate appropriate infection control principles when performing cannulation.
  • Insert a cannula into a manikin arm.
  • Take blood via the cannula on immediate insertion.
  • List the potential complications during and after inserting a cannula.

Course outline
  • The session will start off with a theoretical component followed by demonstrations and then practice. Participants will practice on simulation arms.
  • You will be given ample opportunity to practise on the manikins
  • The second part of this advanced course will enable participants to build on their existing skills to learn techniques and practice on a real person, providing the consent is given.

Equipment & Guidelines
You will be taught following procedural policy and using equipment as recommended by our local Hospital. Please note that you need to check the policy in your own healthcare environment as there may be subtle differences.

Certification and Other Details
On completion of this course, you will receive a Certificate of Competence confirming that you have achieved the above objectives. Supervised cannulation in a clinical setting on real patients is required by most Trust policies to achieve proficiency in this skill. As part of this course, we will advise you on how this can be achieved.
